Portland is the largest city in Maine. It is also the seat of Cumberland County.
The city is located on Casco Bay on the Atlantic Ocean. Portland is situated on a 5 km long and 1.6 km wide peninsula at the confluence of the Fore River in Casco Bay, facing South Portland, to which a bridge links it. Portland also includes other islands in the Gulf of Casco that can only be reached by boat or ferry.
The Maine College of Art, which attracts students from all over the country, has a significant influence on the development of Portland. Currently, the city is once again experiencing a construction boom. In addition, the paper, food, leather and footwear, chemical, clothing, metal, electronic, and wood industries are developing here.
Among the places of interest are the Old Port (a district known for its rocky streets, boutiques, restaurants, and bars), West End (home to some historic Portland buildings, including the Hospital of Mercy), the Art District with galleries, theaters, museums, and Munjoy Hill with Portland Observatory.
Interstate 295 runs through Libbytown, and Oakdale is the campus location of the University of Southern Maine.
